4 Places To Escape The Crowds In New York City

Anybody who has ever been to the ‘City That Never Sleeps’ will be able to describe the way it bombards your senses. With people everywhere, many of them in a hurry, and the relentless honking of car horns, it’s definitely a change of pace from other cities in the world.

The crowds are inescapable at the major attractions, but you should absolutely still visit places like the Statue of Liberty, Time Square and the Rockefeller Centre. If, however, you need somewhere in which to escape the throngs afterwards, these quiet areas are perfect.

Central Park

New York’s most famous green area has to be seen in order for you to fully understand how big it actually is. So, with a park this size, even during busy times you can find a quiet spot or two. As you wander along the paths, you’ll immediately escape the roaring traffic of 5th Avenue and 8th Avenue which run along the outskirts.

Sure, popular areas like the zoo and the Lake can get busy, but if you continue your stroll towards the North Meadow you’re sure to find the peace and quiet you’re looking for. Groups of tourists give way to locals playing baseball and you can even hear some of Central Park’s many birds greeting you with a song.

New York Society Library

The city has some great libraries which all offer somewhere to contemplate your own thoughts for a little while. This one will appeal to a lot of people, though, as it has an elaborate reading room where even non-members can enjoy a few moments to themselves. Housed in an Italian townhouse on East 79th Street, it is one of New York’s oldest cultural institutions and is filled with interesting artworks that have been donated over the years.

Rooftop Bars

One great way to get away from the crowds on the streets is to head upwards. New York has an abundance of fantastic rooftop bars that offer compelling views, a calming atmosphere and delicious food and drink. One of the best, and the City’s tallest, is Bar 54 at the top of the Hyatt Hotel. Whilst looking down on Time Square, you can enjoy sharing boards, regularly changing cocktails and even a local cider.

Other great options include the Pod 39 Rooftop, Roof at the Park South Hotel and Upstairs at the Kimberly – which provides unique views of the Chrysler Building.

The Frick Collection

Art galleries and museums are always a safe bet if you’re looking to turn down the volume and the Frick Collection is a great choice. The former residence of Henry Clay Frick now houses his collection of European art and furniture. Works by some of the famous old masters are on display, such as Vermeer’s Mistress and Maid, and there are temporary exhibitions too.
