Often wrongly thought to be the capital, Canada’s largest city is a place that celebrates diversity and offers plenty to see and do. With it opening its arms to people from all over the world, whether they are looking to live or simply holiday in the city, it’s no surprise that there is also a wide range of food experiences to enjoy in Toronto. Exploring the CN Tower, Casa Loma and the Toronto Islands is sure to make you hungry, so here are some great places worth checking out.
Toronto has a number of excellent food markets but St Lawrence is by far the biggest and best. It’s hard not to be overwhelmed by just how many different options there are. Whether you want to buy something for later, eat at one of the many stores or get something to eat whilst you continue walking, there are so many mouth-watering options. Take a stroll around both floors to see what there is on offer and then return to your favourite.
We recommend: A traditional peameal bacon roll
Having started life as one of the many food trucks that line the streets of Toronto, La Carnita now has four different locations in the city. This popular Mexican restaurant has a trendy vibe and is a great choice if you want to try a range of options from the menu or share with someone else.
We recommend: Mexican chorizo taco
If you’re looking for somewhere to satisfy your sweet tooth then this has to be your first stop. It’s a little bit out of the city centre but the streetcar journey is well worth it. You’ll be able to tell where Bang Bang Ice Cream is thanks to the queue coming out of the door, but you shouldn’t let this put you off either. The main offering is ice cream sandwiches, whereby you choose your ice cream flavour and which cookie you would like and they create it for you. There are some ready-made flavour combinations on the menu or you can just dream up your own. You’ll need to the queuing time to make such an important decision.
We recommend: The Everything cookie with Cinnamon Toast ice cream
With four locations and the option to order takeaway, you will never be too far away from a Pizza Libretto. This cool Italian place offers bar and table seating in a stylish setting and menu options that will have you looking over at the open kitchen to try and catch a glimpse of everything.
We recommend: Duck Confit pizza with slices of pear
Another place that is worth taking a trip outside of the central area for is Glory Hole Doughnuts. Located on a rather unassuming suburban street, they have some classic and more quirky flavours for you to choose from. There’s no skimping on the filling either, and if you can’t make a decision, get three or four in a box so you don’t have to miss out.
We recommend: Lemon Thyme Cream
Wayne Gretzky is possibly the most famous sports star to come out of Toronto and his sports bar is the ideal place for an authentic Canadian experience. The walls are lined with ice hockey memorabilia, meaning there’s a reason to take a trip to the toilet even if you don’t need to go. A number of TV screens show a variety of different sports and the menu features some Canadian specialities that would perfectly accompany a trip to a game.
We recommend: Poutine with added pork barbacoa
This dessert bar is a fantastic concept and something that you will see in many places across North America but not yet in the UK. Once you’ve picked whether you want a cone or a tub, the idea is to select your ice cream flavour(s) and a variety of different toppings and/or sauces. These are then mixed together on a marble slab so that the toppings are not just on the top of your ice cream. As with Bang Bang Ice Cream, there are ready-made combinations available or you can let your imagination run wild.
We recommend: Chocolate and peanut butter ice cream with Reese’s cups and marshmallows
