Discover the secrets of Laos

While many tourists have been lucky enough to experience the delights of Cambodia and Vietnam via a river cruise, few are aware of its further reaches. Flowing from its source in the Tibetan mountains of China, it flows 2,703 miles before reaching its mouth – the Mekong Delta – in southern Vietnam.

In addition to Cambodia and Vietnam, the Mekong River also flows through Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos – a country that is often overlooked when considering travel in Far East Asia. A visit to Laos will open your eyes to a unique culture and a range of historical landmarks that dissimilar to anything that you may have seen in Cambodia and Vietnam. Fred.\ Discover offers a range of Laos tours and this week, we take a closer look at some of the exciting landmarks and sights you will be able to experience during a visit to this intriguing nation.

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is the former capital of Laos and this unique city has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1995. Traditional wooden houses have been blended with remnants of European colonial architecture, reflecting the extensive history of this area. Located in the mountainous region of Laos, Luang Prabang offers a unique architectural and artistic heritage where a stroll on your own can lead you to many hidden discoveries. If you get the chance, try to participate in the Alms ceremony at dawn, where guests and locals can offer rice to monks along Sakkaline Road.

Wat Xieng Thong

Luang Prabang is home to an array of temples and Wat Xieng Thong directly translates as “Temple of the Golden City”. It is one of the most important monasteries in all of Laos and a significant monument in terms of spirituality and art. It was built by the Lao King Setthathirath from 1559-1560 and was beautifully decorated in golden colours.

Wat Wisunalat

Founded in 1512, Wat Wisunalat is considered to be the oldest temple in all of Luang Prabang. It is home to a significant collection of ancient Buddha images. It has been home to the most venerated Buddha image – the Phra Bang Buddha – on two occasions since building work was completed.

Vang Vieng

Travelling outside of the former Lao capital can take you to the riverside town of Vang Vieng, which is located in central Laos. Its location and breath-taking scenery make it an ideal location for outdoor activities such as mountain-biking, trekking, kayaking, and rock climbing. One of the most popular activities is to hire out a rubber ring and simply soak up the sun while floating on the river.
