Discovering Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a beautiful city in the south of Croatia, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and its old city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Here are a few different places in Dubrovnik we recommend you see when visiting this city on the glorious Dalmatian Coast.

Muralles de Dubrovnik

The ancient walls of Dubrovnik were made out of stone and used for defensive purposes. They’re amongst the many well-preserved, military construction systems from the Medieval Period, as they were never broken through.

You can walk the entire 1,940m length, admiring amazing views of the alleys and buildings in the Old Town as well as the clear blue water and sailing boats in the Adriatic Sea. Views of the countryside can also be seen from certain points along the trail.

There are steps up to each of the three entrances in the south, east and west. A stroll along this walkway during sunset offers an entirely different experience compared to a day visit, along with a breathtaking vantage point as the sun sets over the sea.

The Old Town

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you may recognise certain parts of Dubrovnik’s Old Town as it’s where several scenes were filmed. However, if you’re not an avid watcher of the series, the hustle and bustle of the locals and their markets and the many baroque churches and beautifully preserved buildings, complete with intricate architecture, will mean you’ll still love this area.

There is an abundance of narrow, cobbled streets that’ll allow you to explore. You’ll find plenty of restaurants serving local delicacies, bars with a wide selection of drinks on offer and shops that sell handmade good that make perfect souvenirs.

Also within this complex are several marble-paved squares that are filled with life and spirit during the evenings.

City Harbour

The city harbour is located on the south-east side of Dubrovnik and is home to a wide range of boats and ships, of all different shapes and sizes. There are walkways along the harbour that allow tourists to take in the magnificent views, as well as the fresh sea air.

Many coffee shops, bars and restaurants are dotted along the edge of the promenade and are great for tourists who wish to relax with a drink and watch the world go by, as well as the boats. You can also witness the many owners cleaning and repairing their boats and sharing their skills with fellow sailors.

If you fancy a boat trip or excursion then you can cast off from here and visit some of the many islands in the surrounding area.

Cable Car

If you fancy a different view of the city then take the cable car. The bottom station is at the start of King Petar Krešimir Street and you can purchase your tickets here. Once you’ve bought your passes, jump on and take the 10-minute ride up to the top station, which has two panoramic balconies that allow you to experience the best view of Dubrovnik.

There is a restaurant and bar situated at the top where you can grab a quick drink or have a sit-down meal. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to make the most of the scenes back over the city and out to the island of Lokrum, as you won’t get them anywhere else.

We recommend going during sunset as it makes the whole experience feel very romantic and as though it’s been taken straight from a film – perfect for couples.

Fort Lovrijenac

After visiting the Old Town and walking along the ancient walls, walk down to the fort found across from the small city harbour. Here you can learn even more about the history of this magnificent destination and experience some picturesque scenes during the walk down.

Again, Game of Thrones fans will love this monument as it doubles as the Red Keep in the show. You can hire a guide to take you around the inside of this fortress and explain the history of the many items and rooms.

This is also another memorable photo opportunity. From the top, you can capture some stills overlooking the Old Town and the walls surrounding it.
