Although some people will argue that we haven’t had much of a summer here in the UK, there’s no escaping the fact that autumn is just around the corner and winter will inevitably follow. However, there’s no reason to put up with the cold temperatures, persistent rain and blustery conditions if you don’t want to. There are plenty of great destinations out there that can offer a healthy dose of winter sun to keep you smiling and keep that tan topped up well into the New Year.
So, where should you jet-off to in late 2017 or early 2018? Here are a few great ideas.
Pretty much all of the Canary Islands are a great choice for a winter sun holiday because of the fantastic year-round climate they have. La Gomera has a few more things going for it though, including much fewer crowds and a giant national park at its heart that is perfect for walking enthusiasts. With a flight time of under four hours, the island is also a great choice if you are looking to take a short break to drive away those winter blues.
Costa Rica is very popular right now and is only going to become more so in the coming years. The sheer range of holiday experiences you can enjoy make it very appealing to all sorts of people. You can choose to lay on the beautiful beaches, explore the cloud forests in search for wildlife, dive into the oceans, discover cosmopolitan cities like San Jose or let your wild side take over by climbing to the top of a volcano.
Another great choice if you don’t want to travel too far this winter, Cyprus offers fantastic temperatures and breathtaking beaches. It’s perfect for a quick break before Christmas (October and November have a great balance of good weather and small crowds) and with the financial crisis well and truly behind it, the country is on the up again. As half of the island is Turkish and the other half Greek, there are too fantastic cuisines waiting to be enjoyed.
The islands off the coast of Thailand are home to some of the best beaches in the world and our winter is the perfect time to visit, as temperatures are not at their sweltering peak. Whether you want to pamper yourself on Koh Samui, swing effortlessly from a hammock in Koh Lipe or live it up at the full moon parties on Koh Phangan, there’s an island for everyone. Don’t rule out the mainland either, though. Vibrant Bangkok is a great place to start your trip, allowing you to experience the mix of cultures before heading off to the islands to enjoy life at a slower pace.
Southern parts of Sri Lanka are basked in 30-degree heat around December and January, so this is the perfect time to visit. As for reasons to do so, how about the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a safari in one of the 14 national parks, the history behind ancient cities like Kandy, or the food and shopping in Colombo? And that’s without even mentioning the fantastic warmth of the people who will welcome you with open arms.
India is another country that is receiving an influx of tourism at the moment. However, whilst most people head to Delhi, Mumbai or Goa, you can avoid the crowds and discover breathtaking landscapes by opting for a river cruise along the backwaters in the state of Kerala. Travelling on eco-friendly houseboats, you will be able to experience the peacefulness and sheer beauty of the region whilst enjoying a laid back side to India that few expect to find.
