Everybody has their own priorities when they go on holiday. Some people like to relax and do nothing, whilst others like to cram as much adventure as possible into their time away. Some people enjoy the beach, some enjoy the city and some enjoy a cocktail by the pool.
It’s often hard to find a destination that offers all of these things and therefore appeals to everybody in your group. However, with so many different experiences on offer, Italy can be the perfect compromise. Here are just a few types of trip you can look forward to.
Italy is home to some of the world’s most famous and iconic cities. Think Venice, Rome, Milan – all of which boast some amazing sights that everybody wants to see. If you’re the kind of person who loves to tick the touristy things off their list, you’ll relish the chance to visit the Colosseum, Piazza San Marco and Milan Cathedral. And that’s just the obvious places. There are countless other Italian cities where you can soak up the atmosphere, try the world-renowned regional cuisine and discover popular attractions.
Whether you like to explore on two feet or two wheels, adventure awaits all over Italy. Regions such as Liguria, the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany and Cinque Terre are all known for sprawling hiking trails that take you through rolling vineyards, along rugged coastlines and to pretty little villages. Cyclists can enjoy the flats of southern Puglia or the challenging climbs of the Apuane Mountains, but if you’re looking for bigger thrills, why not try the ‘Flight of the Angel’ zipwire in the Basilicata region?
With so much beautiful coastline, it’s no surprise that Italy has its fair share of glorious beaches. The best are typically located on the islands which, thanks to excellent ferry connections, are always easy to reach. Bask on the golden sands of Sicily, Sardinia and Ischia where there is a mix of public hotspots and secluded sections hidden away from the masses. Back on the mainland, sun worshippers will love resorts such as Rimini, Riccione and Vasto on the Adriatic Coast or family-friendly Viareggio in Tuscany.
Like nothing more than doing nothing on your holiday? Consider a relaxing break amongst the elegant towns and calming waters of the Italian Lakes. Garda, Maggiore and Como are names synonymous with glamour and the streets surrounding them have seen more than their fair share of famous faces over the years. The grand hotels that line the shores provide luxurious spas from which you will emerge renewed and ready to tackle that charming trattoria in the next town along.
If you love to delve into the history of your destination when you travel, you will have a veritable treasure chest at your disposal. The epicentre of the Roman Empire and the birthplace of ideas that still heavily influence our lives today, Italy is overflowing with culture and history. Cities like Rome and Florence have an abundance of riches but it is Pompeii and Herculaneum, both of which can be easily reached from Naples, that offer the most intriguing look back in time.
Every winter, thousands of people head to the Italian Alps to hit the slopes. The variety of beginner, intermediate and expert resorts makes Italy the ideal choice for your ski holiday – the vast Milky Way being the model example of somewhere that will suit people of all levels. Other popular places include Passo Tonale and Courmayeur, but if you have non-skiers in your group, you may want to consider the beautiful spa town of Bormio.
If it’s food that governs your travels, you are really going to be spoilt for choice during your holiday to Italy. Each region has its own flavours, recipes and ingredients resulting in a melting pot of delicious cuisine and the inability to decide where to start. The slow food movement is evident wherever you look, prioritising local produce, traditional cooking methods and sustainability to create dishes that jump off the plate. And don’t forget about the wine – Barolo, Chianti, Pinot Grigio and Montepulciano are just a few varieties that the country does particularly well.
