If you’re someone who seeks out new experiences while they are on holiday, then you are going to love our list of exciting new attractions around the world. All of these have recently opened or are coming soon and each of them will provide a memorable highlight during your next trip abroad. From a striking new museum in Egypt to a reimagined harbour area in Oslo, read on to discover all the wonderful experiences you could be having in 2018.
Niagara Falls might be one of the most popular attractions in the world but the area has much more to offer than the falls themselves. Once you have seen the mighty phenomenon up close and from various different perspectives, why not head up to Clifton Hill for some light-hearted family fun. This may be the more commercial side of Niagara, but there is a range of thrilling activities here for people of all ages.
One of these is Niagara Speedway, a multi-level go-kart track set to open in the spring. Said to be the largest elevated go-kart track in North America, you’ll be able to race against friends and family to see who the next Lewis Hamilton is.
The Pyramids of Giza will always be the most breathtaking attraction in this part of the world, but this brand new museum complex is an addition to the skyline which will make you swoon. Set to be the largest archaeological museum in the world, the Grand Egyptian Museum will line up perfectly with two of the Great Pyramids and feature a spacious entrance hall where large artefacts will be displayed.
To mirror the ancient wonder nearby, the building has three pointed apexes and will also have a translucent exterior wall that lights up after dark. As well as being a fascinating attraction in its own right, it will offer enviable views across to the Pyramids. The museum is due to open late in 2018.
Construction started on this skyscraper in 2011 and it is set to become the tallest residential tower in the world when it is completed this year. Already looming over the streets of Mumbai, World One will have 117 storeys when it is finished – including space for cricket pitches, a pavilion and multiple swimming pools.
With interiors designed by Giorgio Armani, the three-bedroom apartments are priced at a cool £1.4 million. It is hoped that this new addition to the skyline will increase tourism as people flock to see World One for themselves and enjoy the views it will enable.
Hotels are rarely seen as attractions but when they offer a luxurious place to rest your head then they can often be the only thing you need on holiday. Set to open along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast in June 2018, Shipwreck Lodge will provide ten plush apartments – eight aimed at couples and two with room for families.
Designed in the image of the many shipwrecks found along the beaches here, the lodge looks rustic from the outside. However, once inside you will be greeted by beautiful furnishings and décor in keeping with the landscapes outside. There’s also an outside seating area attached to each cabin and a communal restaurant. The hotel will offer tours of the nearby dunes, the opportunity to explore the shipwrecks and wildlife spotting adventures.
If you or someone in your family was swept along with the Pokémon Go craze last year, a trip to Tokyo’s brand new Pokémon Café should be your next quest. Attached to the new permanent Pokémon Centre – selling authentic merchandise – the café boasts a menu inspired by some of your favourite characters. There’s a chicken burger in a bun shaped like Pikachu, seafood Doria with Snorlax’s face on it and even a Jigglypuff Cheesecake. The café is taking reservations now, so if you’re off to Tokyo be sure to book your table.
Italian food is one of the world’s favourite cuisines and now there is a chance to try many of the country’s regional delicacies in one place. From the same company that started the popular Eataly food halls in the US, FICO Eataly World opened just outside of Bologna at the end of last year. Surrounded by grazing farm animals and plots of fruit and vegetables, it’s home to 45 different authentic Italian food producers cooking up a storm.
As well as watching the chefs at work through the glass panels in the kitchens and learning from over 30 different educational classes, you can wander from stall to stall tasting sumptuous traditional dishes. Let your taste buds guide you from street food stalls to sit-down restaurants. Oh, and don’t forget about the wine.
Dubai is well known for doing things on a grand scale and has become one of the world’s premier shopping destinations. Cityland Mall will be another addition to this retail paradise, but with the unique concept of having nature at its heart. Six different cultural pavilions, each representing a different continent, will surround a 200,000 square-foot roofed garden known as Central Park. This relaxing spot will be home to a mini water park, flower gardens and comfortable areas where you can take some time out during your shopping marathon.
As well as stores from world-renowned brands, there will be over 75 different restaurants, a dedicated metro station for easy transport links and enough space for 6,000 cars. The shopping centre is due to open towards the end of 2018.
Oslo’s waterfront has received a multi-million-pound regeneration in recent years and the brand new Havnepromenaden ties it all together perfectly. Taking you from one side of the city to the other, this walking route helps you discover some of the city’s best sights whilst experiencing its many vibrant neighbourhoods.
Travel seamlessly from ultra-modern Sørenga into arty Aker Brygge and further into fitness-focussed Filipstad. There is so much to see and experience here and this coastal path creates a car-free environment in which to soak it all in.
