Reed Boat, Peru

On Peru's northern coast, the locals build and use reed boats, also known as caballitos, a name that translates to mean ‘little horses’. To make them, they take dried totora reeds and tie them together tightly, before hopping on board. They either lay down, kneel or stand on the widest part to surf.

However, if you’re hoping for a more relaxing journey, travel to the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca where the Uros people use totora reeds that grow around the lake to make totora-reed boats. These are known as ‘balsas’ and appear larger than the ones used along the Pacific coast. During these boat rides, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful views of the lake and its surrounding wildlife.

Suspension Rail, Germany

The world’s oldest electric suspension railway can be found  in western Germany, in a city called Wuppertal. It extends along 13 kilometres, right through the city centre, above the River Wupper. It has 16 stops along its journey, but only four of those are above ground level.

Around 80,000 people regularly use this mode of transport as their way to work. However, for tourists visiting the area, this is a monorail like no other that provides a unique experience. Many of the city’s best attractions can be visited via this rail; some are only a short walk from the various stops.
