Every country has different traditions and their own way of doing things. When visiting these fascinating places, it’s important to immerse yourself in the local culture, whether that be hopping on a tuk-tuk in Thailand or soaring high in a cable car in Switzerland.
Below are several different modes of transport you can use when visiting these beautiful countries.
If you’re looking to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience, visiting Northern Europe or the Arctic Circle should be on your to-do list. In Tromsø, you can travel from one destination to another by being pulled along by a pack of huskies or several reindeer.
Before enjoying this amazing ride, you’ll have the opportunity to meet your new furry friends, see their comfortable accommodation and speak with their caring owners. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to feed and pet them.
During your journey, you’ll zoom past beautiful landscapes made of towering mountains and fields covered in a blanket of snow. If you choose to travel at night, you may get to see the fascinating Northern Lights.
If you’re an adrenaline seeker, a zipline through the rainforest of Costa Rica is sure to appeal. You’ll start by riding a gondola high up into the mountain tops, providing beautiful views from every angle. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself zooming back down with the mountains getting smaller in the background.
Along your journey, you’ll reach incredible heights and cover endless lengths of land via different stretches of wire and cables. Clouds, canyons and trees pass by in a flash. Whether it’s the views, the feeling of flying or the adrenaline pumping through your veins that you enjoy most, this one-of-a-kind experience will be one to remember regardless.
On Peru's northern coast, the locals build and use reed boats, also known as caballitos, a name that translates to mean ‘little horses’. To make them, they take dried totora reeds and tie them together tightly, before hopping on board. They either lay down, kneel or stand on the widest part to surf.
However, if you’re hoping for a more relaxing journey, travel to the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca where the Uros people use totora reeds that grow around the lake to make totora-reed boats. These are known as ‘balsas’ and appear larger than the ones used along the Pacific coast. During these boat rides, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful views of the lake and its surrounding wildlife.
The world’s oldest electric suspension railway can be found in western Germany, in a city called Wuppertal. It extends along 13 kilometres, right through the city centre, above the River Wupper. It has 16 stops along its journey, but only four of those are above ground level.
Around 80,000 people regularly use this mode of transport as their way to work. However, for tourists visiting the area, this is a monorail like no other that provides a unique experience. Many of the city’s best attractions can be visited via this rail; some are only a short walk from the various stops.
