Costa Rica

With a name that means ‘rich coast’, it’s easy to imagine what to expect during your tour of Costa Rica. What you may not have envisaged, though, is just how much you will grow to love this stunning region of Central America.

A trip to this part of the world is certainly made for nature lovers, as lovers of nature the Costa Ricans most definitely are. Many of the diverse habitats that are found here are being protected so that locals and visitors alike can continue to enjoy areas of rain forest, swamps, marshes and coral reefs, whilst the animals that live there can continue to thrive.

One of the principal places for wildlife spotting is the Manuel Antonio National Park. This is where you will catch a glimpse of exotic species like sloths and agoutis, whilst listening out for the unique call of the howler monkey. The coastal village of Tortuguero is great for seeing caimans, iguanas and brightly-coloured birds, but is mostly famous for the nesting green turtles which you might witness making their way up the beach.

As well as the animals, Costa Rica will show itself to be a great destination for outdoor adventure activities. The dramatic Arenal volcano is situated in an excellent hiking area, where you can trek through lava fields and to hidden waterfalls. If you choose our mixed activity itinerary, there’s also the opportunity to try extreme pursuits such as zip lining, white water rafting, mountain biking and snorkelling.

If nothing else, at least you will know the way to San Jose by the time you return from this trip-of-a-lifetime.
