It goes without saying that Germany is a bustling hub of culture, with many historical landmarks, cultural events, beer festivals, music concerts and Christmas markets to enjoy. Dependant on where and what time you decide to visit, you will be able to enjoy a distinctively unique experience. From the northern cosmopolitan city of Hamburg to the pristine surroundings Passau, Germany offers plenty for the discerning traveller.
No mention of Germany would be complete without mentioning the capital city of Berlin, which is a modern city with many historical remnants. The last remaining section of the Berlin wall offers an insight into how divided the nation once was and a visit to this along with Checkpoint Charlie will deliver a poignant insight. Berlin is home to a fascinating array of churches – the most impressive, of which, is the Berliner Dom, where a short climb to the top offers unparalleled panoramic views.
Oktoberfest is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most loved and recognised festivals, with thousands of people from around the world visiting to get a taste of the local beer. Hosted inside giant beer tents within the Bavarian city of Munich, the event has been held every year since 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
Germany is very fortunate in that it has two of the most popular rivers in Europe passing through it – the Rhine and the Danube. Connected via the Main Canal, these winding waterways offer the chance to travel in luxury to a number of cities including Dusseldorf and Cologne via the Rhine, and Regensburg and Passau via the Danube. These waterways also provide opportunities to travel further into Europe, with the Danube extending into Austria and Hungary. Additionally, Germany’s northern coastline provides an opportunity to arrive via an ocean cruise.
