Gibraltar

Gibraltar sits beyond the southernmost regions of Spain and ‘guards’ the entrance to the Mediterranean. It is also worth noting that this is the narrowest point between Europe and Africa, with just 7.7 nautical miles between Gibraltar and Morocco. Despite being several miles away from the islands of the United Kingdom, the citizens are proud to be loyally British and this is reflected throughout the local culture. Collectively, these factors make Gibraltar a unique place to visit.

The country may only cover an area no bigger than seven square kilometres, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty to see and do. Much of this revolves around the rock, which was regarded, in Greek mythology, as one of the Pillars of Hercules that marked the edge of the known world. Today, it is inhabited by Barbary Macaques, which will come and greet you as you wander around the upper reaches and admire the view over the Mediterranean towards Morocco.

It’s not just the top of the rock that is worth seeing either. Upon your travels, you may find one of the many caves or tunnels that can take you inside the rock, where you will discover a labyrinth of pathways and internal roads that are up to four times longer than those on the surface. Some of these are natural caves, while many tunnels were dug during the Great Siege as a defence system.

Of course, Gibraltar wouldn’t be a Mediterranean destination if it didn’t have any golden beaches upon which to soak up the sun. There are six beaches to choose, enabling you to top up your tan and relax in a tranquil setting. One of the best ways to appreciate the delights of Gibraltar is via an ocean-based cruise through the Mediterranean, but we can also arrange a series of land-based tours with options that also enable you to combine a stay in southern Spain.
