Indonesia

The country of Indonesia consists of a staggering 14,000 islands that lie in the Indian Ocean. Even more incredibly, the nation is home to more than 255 million people, over half of whom live on the island of Java alone. The landscape is dominated by volcanoes that have helped to create the land above sea level over hundreds of years. There are around 150 that are still active today, including Mount Bromo which you may well get to explore for yourself.

As well as the striking active and dormant volcanos, Indonesia is famed for its fascinating wildlife. You can choose to see animals in their natural habitats, whilst also getting to know their beautiful surroundings. Sumatra may be famous for its tigers, but it is also one of the few places in the world where you can observe orang-utans in the world. The island’s Gunung Leuser National Park is also home to leopards, rhinos and elephants. Meanwhile, at the Komodo National Park, on the islands of Komodo and Rinca, you’ll go in search of the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo Dragon.

Being a nation of islands, Indonesia can also be visited as part of a cruise. Bali is probably the most popular destination, but some ships can also take you to Borneo, Komodo and Sulawesi.
