Poland

Poland is a country that offers plenty of variety, with bustling cities, a warm coastline, beautiful countryside and poignant historical landmarks. With so much to see and do, it can be difficult to know where to start, but, wherever you do decide to go, you will be pleasantly surprised by how much this Eastern European nation has to offer.

Starting in the north, Poland’s Baltic coastline can be accessed and fully appreciated on selected ocean-bound cruises via the city of Gdansk. As well as inviting beaches, you will also discover a range of fascinating architectural landmarks that reflect over 1,000 years of history. Long Lane is one of the best places to go to see this for yourself, with many colourful Dutch-inspired buildings flanked by impressive towering gates at either side.

Heading towards the south-western reaches of Poland will take you the city of Wroclaw (pronounced “Ro-Slaf”), which is Poland’s fourth largest city and home to a wealth of fascinating historical landmarks. The Old Town is home to many landmarks of interest including the Royal Palace, a 13th century Town Hall, and the photogenic Market Square – one of the largest city squares in Europe. A short journey outside the city centre provides an opportunity to visit Cathedral Island – a picturesque area that is filled with beautiful churches that date back to the 8th century.

One destination you may be familiar with is Krakow, which is Poland’s second-largest city. Incorporated in 1978, the city’s Old Town was one of the first areas of its kind to gain UNESCO World Heritage status. As an old royal capital, it is home to many precious architectural monuments including Wawel Castle and St. Florian’s Gate – both of which can be admired while walking the distance of Royal Way. On the hour, be sure to listen out for the Hejnal Mariacki (Trumpet Signal), which is sounded from the tower of St Mary Church.

No overview of Poland would be complete without providing a humbling insight into one of the most devastating landmarks in recent times. To visit the cluster of concentration camps that make up Auschwitz is deemed by many as a life-changing experience that needs to be seen to be able to fully comprehend the suffering of the holocaust.

Wherever you would like to go, TravelQuest can offer a range of city break options that can help you to fully appreciate everything Poland has to offer.
