4 Highlights Of A Passage Through The Rockies

Away from the tailor-made holidays that we can put together within Europe, we also offer a range of exciting tours in other parts of the world. One such example is the chance to explore the west coast of Canada in a packaged tour that will take you through the Rocky Mountains from Calgary to Vancouver.

This exciting trip is entitled ‘Passage Through the Rockies’ and has many different highlights. Here are just a few to whet your appetite for adventure.

Visiting A Wolfdog Sanctuary

Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary can be found on the way from Calgary to the town of Banff and will be a worthwhile stop. The not for profit organisation was set up in 2011 with the goal of educating people about wolfdogs and attempting to dispel some of the misunderstandings around these beautiful creatures. You will get to learn about the differences between wolves and dogs and also see why it is so important to promote responsible wolfdog ownership. Your 45 minute guided tour will also include the chance to interact with the animals.

Exploring The Athabasca Glacier

Day five will see you travel from the mountain town of Banff to the stunning Lake Louise or, as some know it, the ‘Jewel of the Rockies’. From here you will head along the Icefields Parkway, one of the most scenic routes in the world, which will take you right through the middle of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site. Along the way, you will stop at the Athabasca Glacier to investigate this pristine wilderness via Ice Explorer (pictured above). The Athabasca Glacier is the most visited glacier in North America and is over six kilometres long. These adapted snow coaches will be able to take you right up onto it so that you can step out and feel the ice under your feet.

Wildlife Spotting In Grizzly Bear Valley

Wherever you go in Canada there are sure to be some excellent opportunities to spot wildlife, and this tour is no exception. During the journey from Jasper to Kamloops, there is the option to take to the water on a safari river cruise through Grizzly Bear Valley. The banks of the Blue River are home to many different animals including eagles, moose and, of course, bears. Your guide will narrate your journey, pointing out any wildlife as you go, and the itinerary is very much determined by what you see. As well as the fauna on display, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular scenery and cascading waterfalls.

Riding The Rocky Mountaineer

Instead of taking the coach from Jasper to Vancouver, you can choose to travel through the mountains aboard The Rocky Mountaineer. This exclusive train has three different grades of carriage with the highest of which (GoldLeaf) offering a glass-domed roof and gourmet hot meals in the dining area. As you travel in style through these breathtaking landscapes, you can sit back and relax as the spectacular scenery effortlessly glides by.
