4 Worldwide Events To Attend In 2021

With that in mind, here are four exciting events happening around the world in 2021, which you may want to attend.

Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, 23rd – 24th February

Enjoy multi-coloured outfits, pumping music and extraordinary floats at the world’s largest carnival in Rio de Janeiro. In the build up to Lent, millions of people take to the streets to celebrate. Every neighbourhood organises a carnival street party, closing the roads and getting everyone nearby involved. You’ll hear steel bass drums and chants echoing from all around, keeping you immersed in the festivities.

The open-air event, the Sambódromo, is where the main carnival takes centre stage. This enormous space is home to a wide runway lined with stadium-like seats. Grab yours and prepare yourself for a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with gigantic themed floats, children dancing the samba and drums blasting beats.

Lantern Festival, Hawaii, 26th February

The Floating Lantern Festival takes place every year on Memorial Day, on the island of O’ahu. Over 5,000 people are drawn to the beach to honour loved ones and as a collective, bringing hope for the future. The festival aims to give participants the chance to reflect and remember previous times, as well as make new memories. It allows people to be surrounded by love and meet strangers going through a similar thing.

Each year there’s a theme to help unite everyone and give a cohesive look to the overall appearance of the light show. During the day, people decorate their lanterns with photos, kind words and even flower petals. The main event starts at 6pm and takes an hour and a half to complete, so you can watch the sun go down and create a beautiful backdrop.

Kings Day, Amsterdam, 27th April

On the 27th April every year, King’s Day takes place in Amsterdam and across the Netherlands . This festival marks the birth of King Willem-Alexander and is one of the biggest and most colourful in the country. Many people choose to wear orange clothes and accessories to pay respect to the Dutch royal family. The streets and canals are decorated with bunting hung between street lamps and canal boats are painted orange.

Aside from wearing orange, you’ll also be encouraged to feast on tompouce, a delicious dessert made up of puff pastry with cream in the middle and orange icing on top. Keep an eye out when wandering  the street markets. They’re overflowing with trinkets and second-hand goods, and you never know what you may come across.

International Balloon Fiesta, Albuquerque, 2nd – 10th October

Have you ever seen images of thousands of hot air balloons drifting through clear, sunny skies? Why not experience it in person at the International Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta? This spectacle  has been organised annually for 50 years and is a world-renowned attraction. People of all ages are attracted to this event, whether you wish to keep your feet on the floor or not.

It’s  organised during the first week of October, when the winds are dull, skies are clear, and the sun is shining. While watching the  hot air balloons silently ascending, the smell of roasting chillies will fill the air. Make sure your camera is close, as you’ll want to capture the beautiful multi-coloured scenes.
