As well as being home to the fantastic city of Melbourne, the Australian state of Victoria offers a picturesque setting of beautiful mansions and stunning gardens. It is these gardens, filled with vibrant colours, fantastic produce and wonderful backdrops, that will take your breath away. We take a look a few of the very best gardens to visit during Victoria tour.
Thanks to an unusually cool climate, the Garden of St Erth is home to a collection of rare and unusual plants. Throughout September, you will find the garden filled with daffodils; whilst the Australian summer will see the garden provide a home for many grasses and perennials. Throughout the garden, you will find an extraordinary range of fruit and vegetables that include finely matured apples and pears. Additionally, the Garden St Erth is also home to a variety of native birds.
Sitting on an easterly slope of the Dandenong mountain range, Cloudehill Garden features deep volcanic loam and soil. It is home to a wonderful range of rare plants, all of which are featured in an extensive range of individual gardens. There is so much to see including rare Rhododendrons, South African bulbs, and rare Japanese bulbs – all of which contribute to the vibrant colour and soothing feeling that the gardens create.
Covering an area of four acres, the Alowyn Gardens, which are located within Yarra Valley, are home to five clearly defined areas. A perennial border displays natural colours which will change from spring to summer. There is also an edible garden of generous proportions, and a formal parterre garden, which has been designed to follow 17th-century principles.
Whilst not specifically a garden, we can offer tours that enable you to visit the Melbourne Flower Show – rated one of the top five shows in the world. Located at the World Heritage Listed Royal Exhibition Centre and Carlton Gardens, the vast array of colour and design on display has ensured visitors have returned year after year. The show is a perfect opportunity to see rare and unusual plants, as well as a strong environmental message for gardening in such a climate.
The Victoria region of Australia is located at the southernmost tip of the mainland, which provides opportunities to visit the neighbouring regions of South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. You could also travel further south and visit the island state of Tasmania, home to beautiful beaches and national parks that feature waterfalls, green forests and rivers.
