As well as vast open spaces and stunning national parks, Alaska is also home to some of the largest cities in the US. In fact, the four largest cities in the United States can be found in the Last Frontier, with its capital sitting in second. Juneau is just one of the stops during our Alaska tours but it offers plenty to do in your spare time. Here are just a few things you can experience in this city situated close to the border with Canada.
If you aren’t already sick of the sight of giant frozen rivers (and let’s face it, why would you ever be?), it is worth venturing outside of the city centre to Mendenhall Glacier. Alaskans are very proud of their glaciers and this is the largest in the area. As well as exploring its surface on one of the many trails, you can also inspect the ice caves, spot salmon and bears, visit Nugget Falls or simply view the exhibits in the visitors centre.
Shopping in Juneau is a pleasant experience and there are many places to find the perfect souvenir. Lovers of art might like to take home a painting inspired by Alaska’s wonderful scenery or a traditional carved totem pole. If your eyes light up at the sight of jewellery then you may like to purchase a native piece or even a pin badge designed locally by William Spear. And if you want to return home with a piece of Juneau in your bag, you can buy soap made with glacier silt that is said to do wonders for skin exfoliation.
The seafood in Alaska is fantastic and something that you simply must try whilst you are in Juneau is the salmon. One of the best places to do this (and enjoy stunning views at the same time) is the Alaskan Grill by the Twisted Fish Co. There’s also a range of options for anyone not wanting seafood, so they have no excuse not to come with you. If, however, you prefer to see your salmon still swimming, the many spawning streams in Juneau are bursting with them between July and September.
If you only have a short time in the city and you want to see as much of Juneau as possible, why not view it all at once from the top of Mount Roberts. The Goldbelt Mount Roberts Tramway is a cable car that rises almost 2,000 feet through lush rain forest and into alpine meadows. Once at the top, you can simply admire the views below, check out the birds of prey at the Juneau Raptor Centre, visit the charming nature centre or hike further up Mount Roberts.
Whether your time in Juneau is brief or more enduring, there is plenty to do whilst you are here. If you would like to try any of the above, you can speak to our friendly team and book your Alaska tour today.
