Croatia

With one of the most enviable coastlines in the whole of the Balkan Peninsula, Croatia’s proximity to the Adriatic Sea offers a warm climate, plenty of golden beaches and an array of spectacular historical cities. Head further in-land, though, and you will discover a range of jaw-dropping landscapes consisting of towering mountains, glistening lakes and dense forests.

One of the most popular destinations that people decide to visit during their time in Croatia is Dubrovnik and it really is easy to see why. An old town filled with medieval red-roofed houses, churches, palaces and bell towers encapsulated by an ancient city wall. Wandering along the top of the wall will enable you to truly appreciate just how spectacular this city really is and is an absolute must-do activity during your visit.

Split is another spectacular Croatian city that has also had a share of the limelight in recent years. The entire city has been built around the Diocletian Palace – which was originally built as a residence and fortress for the Roman emperor of the same name. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to a series of significant historical landmarks and offers an unparalleled insight into the Roman era. Alternatively, you can head to the Riva promenade – a modern part of the city that is home to a relaxing beach and makes for a relaxing stroll.

Situated in the northern regions is the Croatian capital of Zagreb, which is mistakenly overlooked by many visitors. Its cobbled streets are reminiscent of those that you may expect to see in Austria or Italy and will guide you through to both the Upper and Lower Town areas. The Upper Town is home to a city’s medieval centre and you will find many significant landmarks including a beautiful cathedral and an old town gate featuring a sacred painting of Mother Mary. Contrastingly, the Lower Town is much more modern and houses the city’s business district, but you will also find many serene parks, gardens and museums within this area.

If it is peace and tranquillity that you are searching for, you will certainly enjoy a visit to the mesmerising Plitvice Lakes. This UNESCO World Heritage site – made up of 16 interlinked lakes and a large forested area - is one of the most breath-taking natural landmarks in all of Europe. A series of waterfalls and an abundance of natural flora and fauna make this a truly amazing area to visit and one that will leave you with many incredible memories.

Situated just off of the Croatian coastline is a series of islands that each offer a unique sense of relaxation. Selected Eastern Mediterranean cruises with Star Clippers offer a chance to visit a number of these picturesque islands including Korcula, Hvar and Mali Losinj.
